They planned to begin production in Los Angeles. From there, they would shoot the story as they actually drove across the country. The remainder would be filmed in Kingsbury's real-life hometown of Franklin County, Massachusetts.
Located about two hours west of Boston, Franklin County was the pair's dream location. "It's a small community;" says Kingsbury. "Everybody knows everybody and really wanted to lend a hand."
They thought it would take a lot of convincing to get locals to sign on. Kingsbury planned a full-week trip to scout and confirm eighteen different locations that they needed.
His mission was complete in just two days.
"People were incredibly willing to help. They really wanted to get involved, and we couldn't have been more excited. Certainly a different reception than you'd get in Los Angeles!"
With the remaining five days of his trip, Kingsbury organized donations of a home base location, cast and crew housing, the loan of a 30-foot camper, and an afternoon of aerial photography. Local businesses offered themselves as locations, provided props and costuming, even donated tuxedoes and dresses for the climactic wedding scenes.
How did he convince them to commit all of this time and effort?
"I asked, " says Kingsbury. "People are nicer out there."
